New world record sets - whisky bottle of Macallan sells for £848k

It beat the previous world record £814,081, set by another bottle from the same Macallan limited edition, set in May this year at Bonhams' in Hong Kong.

The seller, a UK-based whisky connoisseur, was travelling in a taxi in Italy when the hammer came down, but was said to be thrilled.

Based on 40 small drams from a bottle, the staggering sum is equivalent to over £21,000 per nip - if the buyer decides to open it.

Collectors from around the world, including China, Hong Kong and Russia as well as the UK, packed the auction room in the capital's Queen Street.

Bidding started at £500,000 -- way beyond the previous record of £68,500 for a bottle sold at auction in Scotland, a Glenfiddich-64 year old 1937, sold at Bonhams in 2016.

When auctioneer Charles Graham-Campbell brought the hammer down at £700,000, there was a round of applause in the room. The new record £848,750, includes the buyer's premiums.

Richard Harvey, Bonham's Senior International Director, Wine, said: We were hoping a new world record would be set, having broken the record twice in Hong Kong on the same day in May.

To have broken the record for a bottle of whisky at auction three times in six months is astounding.

It is fitting that the new record for this iconic Scottish product should be set here in Scotland.

This bottle was part of a wonderful collection that belonged to a real whisky connoisseur and enthusiast, and he is thrilled.
