The television and radio presenter was hospitalised earlier this month (Jul18) after he fell ill with suspected pneumonia on a flight from the U.S. to Britain and was placed in a medically-induced coma by staff at Lewisham Hospital, London, to allow his body to fight the infection.
The 42-year-old, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife Rebecca and children Arthur, six, and Ivy, four, took to Twitter on Monday (16Jul18) to confirm he is out of the coma and recovering well. In a series of since-deleted tweets, he recounted his terrifying experience and praised the National Health Service (NHS) for saving his life.
"So I did 6 days strght in a coma. Been here another 4 since. It’s an yet unidentified double chest infection. I nearly died. At one point, as I was as run down a hallway to ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at midnight, with a massive needle jammed in my chest (bit like Pulp Fiction) I thought, this is it 1/2 (sic)," he penned. "2/2 How's is this going to affect my kids' lives? Who's going to sit my poor dad down and say "I'm sorry, we did everything we could". But then I didn't die. And I didn't die because I'm on the NHS . VivaTheNHS. See you on your (100 emoji)th (birthday). By which time I will probably have penumonia (sic)."
Richard last checked in on the social media site on 5 July, where he shared a smiling photo of himself wired up to a machine.
Reports of his worsening health began to circulate last week, with The Sun claiming it was "touch and go" for the star. Richard's sister Juliet later shared an image of hospital doors to her Instagram account admitting she had been visiting him for the past week.
The TV star's first tweet since the incident was a quote about the true meaning of love, to which he added: "I'm learning this."
Comedian David Baddiel and scientist Brian Cox were among the first to welcome Richard back with well wishes, while Gary Lineker opted for comedy, quipping: "Have you overslept?"
