No confidence in Theresa May over Brexit - Tory MP urges vote

A Tory MP has called for a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister in a letter to his constituents.

Shipley MP Philip Davies submitted the letter, saying he had ‘lost trust’ in Theresa May’s ability to ‘deliver the referendum result’.

According to the Yorkshire Post, he said he had been contacted by members and voters in his constituency about the Prime Minister’s Chequers plan for a ‘common rule book’ with the EU on goods.

It was ‘clear that many people are concerned by this,’ he wrote.

May’s plan for Brexit – outlined in a white paper released to MPs in the House of Commons last week – has divided the already split Tory party.

Prominent ex-ministers David Davis and Boris Johnson resigned from the cabinet over the plan devised at the PM’s country retreat Chequers.

Davies said the plan on trade is ‘unacceptable’ and raised concerns that May being unable to deliver on Brexit negotiations with the EU would ‘almost certainly lead to the catastrophe of Jeremy Corbyn becoming Prime Minister.’

A vote of no confidence is a motion moved in the House of Commons with the wording: ‘That this House has no confidence in HM Government.’

If such a motion is agreed to, and a new government with the support of a majority of MPs cannot be formed within a period of 14 calendar days, Parliament is dissolved and an early General Election is triggered.

A motion of no confidence is one of only two ways in which an early General Election may be triggered under the terms of the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011.
