Jürgen Klopp Signals The End Of His Summer Spending Spree

The Liverpool manager suggests that the club has concluded it’s transfer dealings ahead of the U.S. pre-season tour.

It’s exciting when the new faces arrive at Melwood, with their smiling and hugging and finger-gunning. Liverpool have now brought in four such fresh footballers this summer. Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson are officially Reds. Jürgen Klopp and Michael Edwards and the whole transfer team have gone out and secured some incredible talent for Liverpool this summer.

Klopp’s team will be expected to compete for the Premier League title in the coming season as well as make another run to the Champions League final. How did we get here from there? So long were we in the darkness, barely fighting to reach Europa League positions in the table. The long answer involves lots of people and their talents and things like hard work and money. But the short answer is Jürgen Klopp.

The manager has been a magnet for talented footballers in the world and a beacon to those whose talents had not been fully utilized at their previous clubs. Liverpool is a prime destination again and young, title-hungry footballers are eager to sign up. Unfortunately, Klopp can’t collect them all.

There comes a time when the signings are done and the team is set. And as the U.S. pre-season tour approaches, Klopp has suggested that Liverpool may in fact have done their last awkward interview in the dark this summer.

“We have everything we need for the next season because I don’t think we will do anything more (in the market), I’m pretty sure of that,” said Klopp.

“We have the squad now for the moment, and that’s the most important thing. We were not too bad last year but we had to improve and we tried that in the transfer market.

“We lost one or two players and we brought in a few. I’m really happy with our signings to be honest, so now let’s use the last few weeks of pre-season to be as good as possible.”

Of course, not doing anything more in the market means no more Nabil Fekir coming to Liverpool. Good feelings, gone? I don’t know. There’s time for Michael Edwards to make it happen if the manager still wants the player. And we just don’t know what goes on behind-the-scenes with regards to mind games and dealing with the likes of Lyon’s Jean Michel Aulas. For now, Fekir remains available.

Liverpool have spent quite a bit of money this window and the squad will be strong next season. But depth still appears to be an issue. Emre Can is essentially replaced with Fabinho. Naby Keita takes over for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is now out for the entirety of the 18/19 season. And Shaqiri will be expected to spell Mohamed Salah and others in the attacking band. There is still time for Klopp to look other attacking midfielder/forwards similar to Fekir, if that deal has truly died, to ensure the team doesn’t get overrun competing on multiple fronts.
